Call for Art: Who the Fuck is Erikson?
This show will be a multiplatform exhibition. The exhibition will be installed at The Bedroom's physical gallery space in Pennsylvania, as well as being digitally displayed on our website. The exhibition will open on July 17th with a Zoom reception from 7-9 PM EST!
Really, who the fuck is Erikson? Erik Erikson was a German-American psychologist most famously accredited for trademarking the phrase identity crisis. Erikson believed that this is one of the most important conflicts people face in development. Identity crisis is a time of intensive analysis and exploration of different ways of looking at oneself.
Now, what does Erikson's theory of identity crisis have to do with art? As artists, we have been institutionally told that we must create an artistic voice as a way to identify and brand ourselves. One of the hardest parts of being an artist is answering: Who the fuck am I? As artists, we are constantly adapting to new circumstances, responding to external stimuli, and just trying to make art. Whether we are conscious of it or not, our artist voices are always evolving. We are hesitant to create, let alone exhibit, work that goes beyond our preconceived ‘artistic voice.’ at The Bedroom Art Gallery, we say -- Fuck that.
Who the Fuck is Erikson? is an exhibition that is the antithesis of self-branding and artistic style. This exhibition allows artists to exhibit work that is stylistically, materially, or thematically in opposition to their ‘artistic voice.’ This exhibition encouraged artists to create artworks without the burden of its integration into their previous bodies of work.
Who the Fuck is Erikson? is juried by Devin Wilson, a recent BFA graduate of Boston University. All mediums of artwork will be considered.
